What graphic designers do

We see advertisements everyday. We open different websites everyday, but who is designing all of this? Well this is all done by a graphic designer and I’m currently studying to become one.

Why did I choose graphic design?

I came to the graphic and web design program not knowing what I really wanted to do in life but I know very well that I’m really good at drawing and that I’ve always loved taking pictures. One thing for sure I knew is that I didn’t want to become just an artist or an art teacher. I didn’t know much about computers, especially Apple but I was never against learning more about them. However, I only thought of graphic design when I was in sec. 5.

What I learned about graphic design

I’m sure most of you, when you see any kind of advertisement, you would think it’s easy to design them. Just write something, add a nice image and put whatever color you would think would look nice.

After I started studying graphic design I understood that graphic design is more than just text, an image and color you like. They don’t just choose a color because they like it or it looks nice. It has to mean something, represent something. Same thing with typography. Each typeface, each font evokes some kind of emotion, personality.

Graphic designers design all kinds of things. They design branding and identity stuff like logos, business cards, posters…They also do websites (the creative part), mobile app, social media graphics like post, stories. Creating digital ads is also part of their job. Their job is to advertise everything and to transfer the same message to everyone.

  • Softwares graphic designer use

Graphic designers use a lot of different softwares to design everything we see every day. A lot of them are not free. and most of them are from Adobe.

    Photoshop

For example they use adobe photoshop to make an images look better. They edit them, do some retouching on photos. Graphic designers also use it to create digital art and composite. They use customizable brushes and textures to produce original digital illustrations from scratch.

    Lightroom

Adobe Lightroom is similar to photoshop. It’s for adjusting light and color on photos like in photoshop. Lightroom is different because it’s for organizing and batch-editing images.

Another software that is used for organizing is called bridge. Bridge uses adobe camera raw to edit photos, which has the exact same tools as Lightroom. However, double-clicking an image in Bridge opens it in a separate window or Photoshop, whereas Lightroom keeps you inside a unified, fluid workspace

    InDesign

Adobe InDesign is a software for designing multi-page documents and print or digital media. Which is why they use it for mostly posters or book design or magazines.

    Illustrator

Meanwhile Adobe Illustrator is used to create and edit scalable vector graphics like logos, icons, drawings, typography, and complex illustrations. The name says it all. It’s for any kind of illustration.

Each software is used for different things.

    Website design

Yes… for web design they learn coding to design them but there are options to design them without writing everything with code. Coding is mostly for computer scientists. Sometimes we need them to build a specific type of website. For example all the websites that we all use to buy stuff from. Then comes the graphic designer to make the creative part of it, which is what we all see when we open a website.
